The International Women’s Health Coalition (IWHC) strongly urges the US Senate to reject the nomination of Mike Pompeo for Secretary of State. Pompeo, currently the CIA Director, has a history of promoting bigotry and undermining human rights, including the rights of women and LGBTQ individuals. As we previously noted, his beliefs, statements, and votes as a member of Congress, show that he is not qualified to lead the United States’ global diplomacy.
IWHC joined with 60 organizations in urging the Senate to reject Pompeo’s confirmation based on his record. During his confirmation hearing with the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Pompeo was unable and unwilling to walk back his past homophobic and Islamaphobic comments. He could not clearly commit to keeping ideology and politics out of the State Department’s annual Human Rights Reports, one of the US government’s best tools to report on abuses around the world. He gave no indication that he would push back on the Trump administration’s deadly policies, such as the Global Gag Rule, and refused to commit to restore funding to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The State Department should be led by someone committed to upholding the human rights of all people, who is capable of holding other governments to account for human rights abuses and will put people ahead of politics. Mike Pompeo is not that person. Today’s historically close vote in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee should make it clear to the full Senate that Pompeo is not fit for this role. We urge all Senators to vote against Pompeo’s confirmation as Secretary of State.
