The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) is a program of the Arab Foundation for Freedoms and Equality (AFE) in Beirut, Lebanon, which brings together activists, academics, and researchers who work on issues related to gender and sexuality in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
GSRC aggregates resources from and about the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region on gender and sexuality, with as strong emphasis on material produced in Arabic. It provides valuable research and information to academics and activists alike.
News headlines from the MENA region tend to highlight the current unrest and conflict, and news stories predominantly feature men. GSRC tackles this one-dimensional view, which fails to capture the complexity of the region, women’s perspectives, and issues of gender, sexuality, and reproductive rights.
Of the research and stories on these themes that do exist, few are produced in Arabic. GSRC aims to address this gap. GSRC’s activities revolve around its free, public, and easily-accessible web portal, which features an extensive database of resources. GSRC also produces short videos, offers trainings and seminars on related topics, and maps media coverage on topics related to gender and sexuality. GSRC also offers support for young researchers, academics and activists working on gender and/or sexuality to present their work, gain exposure, and network.
