Founded in 1989, ECOS Comunicação em Sexualidade (ECOS Communication in Sexuality) is one of the only nongovernmental organizations in Brazil working to promote comprehensive sexuality education. ECOS engages in advocacy, conducts research studies, produces educational materials, and trains education professionals.
In 2009, ECOS helped create REGES – Rede de Gênero e Educação em Sexualidade (Gender and Sexuality Education Network), a network of educators interested in advancing comprehensive sexuality education policies and programs.
ECOS aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people, with the objective of eradicating all forms of discrimination based on social class, race and ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age and physical and mental disabilities.
ECOS has become a leading national voice on sexuality education in Brazil. Its leaders and staff regularly participate in national debates and public forums on education issues. ECOS continues to produce and distribute training materials to thousands of educators across the country. International education experts have commended the organization for its efforts in protecting and advancing comprehensive sexuality education in Brazil.
