Reports from the Field: Safe and Legal Abortion in Africa and Asia

At our most recent Young Advocates Network event on April 29, 2014, IWHC’s Director of International Partnerships, Jennifer Dreher, talked about her recent travels to visit IWHC’s grassroots partners in Africa (Kenya and Nigeria), and South Asia (India and Nepal), discussed what these organizations are doing on the ground to ensure access to safe and legal abortion.

Each year, an estimated 22 million unsafe abortions take place worldwide, nearly all in developing countries. Annually, 47,000 deaths are caused by complications of unsafe abortion and five million women and girls suffer permanent injury as a result. Even in countries where abortion is legal to save a woman’s health, it often remains unsafe and inaccessible, especially for poor and rural women.
