Stuart Burden is a Philanthropic Advisor based in San Francisco. His passion for justice, equality, and human rights fuels his pursuit of lasting solutions to complex social problems. He has more than 20 years of experience in grantmaking, corporate social responsibility, management consulting, and strategic communications.
Burden has worked with several private and corporate foundations including, most recently, the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation where he served as Associate Director for Organizational Effectiveness. Prior to joining the Bechtel Foundation, he worked as a not-for-profit management consultant with the Monitor Institute (now Monitor Deloitte), and developed and implemented funding strategies for Levi Strauss & Co., the Levi Strauss Foundation, and the MacArthur Foundation. In addition, he has managed both policy- and community-level initiatives at the Ford Foundation and the New York Foundation.
From April 2000 to January 2003, Burden served on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, spanning both the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and his Master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
