The International Women’s Health Coalition denounces the travel ban issued against Azza Soliman, renowned Egyptian lawyer, women’s human rights defender and chair of the board of trustees of the Center for Egyptian Women’s Legal Assistance (CEWLA), an organization providing legal assistance to disadvantaged Egyptian women.
Ms. Soliman was on her way to Jordan when she was informed that a judicial order had been issued on November 17, 2016 to ban her from traveling outside Egypt. This order was issued without any due process – without any prior notice to her, and without any investigation or opportunity for Ms. Soliman to hear of any case against her.
We urge the government of Egypt to cease its harassment of women’s human rights defenders and civil society organizations, and to immediately lift the ban against Ms. Soliman.
