Jornadas: A National Network of Feminist Organizations
The Brazilian Initiative for the Right to Legal and Safe Abortion (Jornadas Brasileiras pelo Direito ao Aborto Legal e Seguro-Jornadas) is a network of organizations that advocate nationally for legal and policy reforms to ensure women’s access to safe, legal abortion services. Jornadas recognizes access to safe abortion as a human right. The fulfillment of this right is critical to women’s abilities to control their bodies, exercise their rights to self-determination and health, and to achieve a just society grounded in gender equality.
Jornadas builds support for the abortion rights movement among university students and labor and social movements. The network organizes educational forums, holds national meetings on the need for safe, legal abortion and monitors popular opinion and media coverage on the issue. Jornadas conducts intensive media outreach to ensure prominent and balanced coverage of sexual and reproductive rights and health topics. Jornadas was formed in Brasilia in 2004 and the Executive Secretariat is held by IWHC colleague Catholics for the Right to Decide-Brazil (Católicas pelo Direito de Decidir-Brasil).
