KEY TOPICS & ISSUES

Go straight to what you're looking for>>

>>Africa
Read more about IWHC's colleagues on the ground in Nigeria, Cameroun, and Mozambique: activists, physicians, educators, feminist leaders, and young people working to change the lives of their fellow citizens and the policies of their countries. Key topics include HIV/AIDS, sexuality education, maternal mortality, unsafe abortion, trafficking, youth-friendly health services, sexuality and human rights, and harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM). This section also includes background information on key issues in sexual and reproductive health facing women and young people across the African continent.

>>Asia and the Middle East
Read more about IWHC's colleagues' diverse efforts to make women's voices heard across Asia and the Middle East, where women face high rates of violence, lack access to quality, respectful, comprehensive healthcare, and must contend with opposition from rising fundamentalist movements in exercising their human rights. Throughout the Middle East and North Africa, the Istanbul-based Women for Women's Human Rights (WWHR) is raising awareness around the sexual rights and bodily integrity of women and young people, topics that remain shrouded in silence. Read about WWHR and other IWHC colleagues and initiatives in Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and regionwide.

>>Eastern Europe
Central and Eastern Europe has the fastest-growing rate of HIV/AIDS incidence in the world, and across this region of economic and political transition, women lack the information, services, and support they need to exercise their reproductive rights. Read about the regionwide ASTRA network and its member organizations' efforts to focus attention on the health needs and human rights of women and youth.

>>Latin America
Read more about IWHC's colleagues on the ground in Brazil, Peru, Uruguay, and Argentina, and regionwide youth and women's movements working to promote and protect sexual and reproductive rights, citizenship, and justice. Key topics include adolescent health and sexuality education, maternal mortality, HIV/AIDS, democracy and citizenship, violence against women, unsafe abortion, emergency contraception, rural and indigenous women's reproductive health, and the rights and health of Latin America's underrepresented Afro-descendent populations.

>>U.S. Foreign Policy
A round-up of U.S. foreign policies that are harmful to women worldwide, including in-depth analyses of the Global Gag Rule, the defunding of UNFPA, the President's Emergency Plan for HIV/AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), and a summary of key policies and actions that undermine young people's health and rights in the U.S. and abroad.

>>HIV/AIDS and Women
Women worldwide—especially young women—are disproportionately vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, yet few programs aimed at curbing the pandemic's spread target them or reflect the realities of their lives. If we want to stop HIV/AIDS—in Africa, in Asia, in Latin America, in Eastern Europe, and here in the United States—we need to put women at the center of our prevention efforts. Read more about how IWHC's colleagues are working to eradicate the gender inequalities that make women so vulnerable.

>>Adolescents
There are 1.2 billion people between the ages of 10 and 19 alive today—the largest generation of adolescents ever . Read more about the challenges they face in making a healthy transition to adulthood, and what IWHC's colleagues are doing to address their needs and make their voices heard worldwide.
