The International Women's Health Coalition (IWHC) promotes and protects the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and young people worldwide. As an international nonprofit organization, IWHC is an innovator and trusted authority in health policy and program development.  We bridge two worlds-the international women's health and rights movement and influential population and health institutions, including governments and the United Nations system.  The Coalition: 

  • Invests grants and professional expertise in 75 local organizations in 10 countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America that strengthen their communities and their governments' policies and programs;
  • Develops cutting-edge policy guidance with local partners and international experts to ensure that sexual and reproductive rights are upheld as human rights and that international health policies and budgets effectively address women's realities; and
  • Stimulates progress through a multifaceted communications program aimed at influential policymakers, donor agencies, health and rights professionals, and media.

PRIMARY PURPOSE AND FUNCTION:

The Director/Vice President of Development is responsible for the design, implementation and evaluation of IWHC's strategy to move from a $8.5 million annual budget in FY2009 to $10 million in FY2010. S/he will build on a strong revenue base of private foundations and European governments, while also growing support from individuals and corporations in the United States and Europe. (IWHC does not accept funds from the United States government.)

S/he is accountable for fundraising results; building a highly productive, well-functioning development team; and working with other senior managers, program staff, an active Board and volunteers. S/he is a member of IWHC's Senior Management Team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides vision, leadership and strategic analysis and plans for IWHC's fundraising. 
  • As member of Senior Management Team, works with other senior managers to develop compelling cases for new program initiatives, as well as annual and multiyear program plans.
  • Sets goals, oversees budgets and manages staff for all categories of donors including new institutional sources and renewals, an ambitious Annual Fund Campaign to reach individuals, an established $1+ million annual gala, and expanded outreach to corporations.
  • Together with senior managers, identifies, educates, and follows up with donors and prospects, especially high level foundation officers, corporate leaders, major gifts prospects and others.
  • Produces and oversees proposals, budgets and reports to donors; donor research; compliance with guidelines; writing and editing; design and maintenance of effective information systems and liaises with the business office.
  • Works closely with the Board of Directors, particularly the Development Committee, and is responsible for their productive engagement in development.
  • Together with the Communications Program and development staff, conceives and helps develop promotional, educational, and solicitation materials and events; ensures that branding, marketing, online campaigns and the IWHC Web site are optimally effective for online giving and donor communication.
  • Partners with programmatic staff to represent IWHC, remaining well-versed in programmatic content, priorities and accomplishments as well as emerging developments in women's health and rights.
  • Stays abreast of developments in charitable giving, including legal issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

This position requires a self-motivated strategic thinker with a proven record of working independently and achieving results, who is also very well organized, attentive to detail and able to juggle multiple projects.  It requires someone who enjoys building and sustaining effective relationships with diverse staff, Board members, volunteers and funders.

  • Ten or more years of fundraising experience with major donors, foundations and corporations; demonstrated track record in raising $8-10 million annually.
  • Recognized excellence in interpersonal, project and staff management skills; outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Passion for IWHC's mission and work required.
  • BA required; background in women's health, human rights, international affairs strongly preferred.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, high energy, positive attitude and diplomacy.

Senior Program Officer, International Policy and Advocacy

The International Women's Health Coalition (IWHC) directly improves women's lives through professional collaboration and grants to dozens of health and rights organizations around the world. At the International level, IWHC brings pioneering ideas to the forefront of negotiations on women's rights and health.  IWHC plays an active role at United Nations and other inter-governmental conferences and collaborates with governments and global health policymakers, including United Nations agencies and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria  Population Fund to defend women's right to reproductive health information and services. IWHC is based in New York, New York. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Program Officer will take responsibility for IWHC's advocacy to influence global health policies, programs and budgets to prioritize Sexual and Reproductive Rights and Health (SRRH). S/he keeps a watching brief on major global initiatives and agencies, selects those most important to SRRH, provides them substantive input, works with their governing boards and advisory committees, and mobilizes alliances to support IWHC's positions.  S/he also contributes to overall design, implementation and monitoring of IWHC's sexual and reproductive rights and health international policy program.  S/he will cultivate relationships with colleagues and other stakeholders, maintain substantive knowledge of issues, policies and networks, write and present on primary topics; collaborate with regional program officers to coordinate with their policy strategies at the national and regional levels; and, contribute expertise, perspective and input to IWHC's overall program, strategy, and organizational development.

  • Contribute to design and implementation of International Policy program:
    •  Provide conceptual and strategic leadership to issues, including safe motherhood, comprehensive sexuality education, and human rights and sexuality.
    • Conceptualize, write, present, and publish papers on selected policy issues in international fora; design and convene seminars and issue-specific panels on selected topics, and commission papers for publication.
    • Identify and maintain ongoing relationships with a wide range of international actors and represent IWHC at international meetings.
    • Identify regional colleagues to participate in collaborative activities with international organizations; serve as a resource on policy.
    • Serve as a resource on policy information for IWHC staff, colleagues, and international organizations.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

  • BA required, Masters' degree or equivalent preferred.

The Program Officer, Online Communications and Campaigns is responsible for conceptualizing an overall online strategy to include the IWHC Web site, general and issue-specific email campaigns, online content, and social networking.   S/he is accountable for results including online constituency engagement and retention, as well as policy, programmatic and fundraising impact.  The work of the Program Officer directly advances IWHC’s recognition as a trusted resource for policy analysis, innovative and effective programming and advocacy solutions, and provocative action-oriented commentary.  The successful candidate must be able to balance accuracy with timeliness, maximize existing resources, work well with all program staff and partners, and work effectively in a multicultural, multilingual environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide vision, creativity, strategic analysis and annual and multiyear goals, plans and budgets for IWHC's online communications and campaigns. 
  • Together with the Director of Communications, ensure that online activities are consistent with overall Communications goals and IWHC’s strategic plan, including an increased emphasis on development of audio/visual content, translation where appropriate, and targeting of a worldwide audience of influential stakeholders.
  • Manage all aspects of IWHC’s Web site, online content development and campaigns, social networking and emerging technologies.
  • Help create and ensure timely delivery of content via new media:  IWHC’s Web site, email communication, relevant list servs, blog sites, informational and social networking Web sites.
  • Work closely with the Program Officer, Communications to ensure that all electronic content is accurate and consistent with other communications from IWHC.

The Asia Program works directly with a limited number of key organizations and colleagues who engage at the policy level on sexual and reproductive rights and health issues in their countries, and region-wide. In addition to the policy focus, the Asia program has some of IWHC's strongest partners working on human rights and sexuality, and a new effort working with youth organizations.  There is a strong emphasis on professional collaboration, with supportive grants and technical assistance where appropriate.  The Asia Program currently works with colleagues in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia and a network based in Turkey, and is expanding region-wide collaboration.

PRIMARY PURPOSE & FUNCTION

  • Design and implement a program of grants and professional and advocacy assistance in Asia consistent with IWHC's mission, goals and objectives.
  • Contribute expertise, perspective and input to IWHC's overall program, strategy, and organizational development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conceptualize, implement and monitor an ongoing program of work in Asia:
    • Continually assess emerging opportunities for policy reform and program development in women's and youth sexual and reproductive rights and health in selected countries in Asia and region-wide.
    • Identify potential new colleagues and maintain relationships with individuals and organizations that can contribute to such policy reform through advocacy, public education, and action research.
    • Manage limited grants program: solicit, review, and help develop proposals; administer grants; monitor progress; assess impact and quality; and plan for sustainability.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Passion for IWHC's mission.
  • Five or more years work experience in women's sexual and reproductive rights and health, including at least three years working in or with organizations based in Asia.
  • Experience in program conceptualization, development and management, preferably with experience in grant making.
  • Experience in assisting organizations in institutional strengthening (e.g., strategic planning, budgeting, and staffing).
  • Strong analytic and strategic thinking ability and political judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with colleagues from diverse disciplines and perspectives, and demonstrated effectiveness at interaction in various settings and fora. 
  • Skills in one or more technical area (e.g. program evaluation/assessment; organizational development and capacity-building; advocacy; health sector reform processes).
  • Proven ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a challenging environment, and to balance programmatic and organizational needs.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage budgets and financial reports.
  • Knowledge of donors and experience with fundraising.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Competency in one or more Asian languages strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to travel to and within Asia up to 30 percent of time.

  • Staff supervision: Supervise one shared Program Associate.

IWHC’s Africa Program has worked for two decades with NGOs, public institutions and international agencies to advance policies, programs and activities that will advance youth health and rights, promote and protect sexual and reproductive rights and health (SRRH), and increase access to safe abortion. The program has supported work in Cameroun and Nigeria, as well as region-wide initiatives and networks.  Many of IWHC’s partners work on youth health and rights, but the program is increasingly emphasizing SRRH policy advocacy, including in the area of HIV/AIDS, sexual rights and safe abortion.  In 2007 IWHC decided to increase programming in the Southern Africa sub-region, and will do the same in Francophone countries in FY 2009.   

We are seeking a Program Officer to lead IWHC’s work in Southern Africa.  The Program Officer, Southern Africa will take primary responsibility for shaping and implementing IWHC’s strategy in the sub-region, design a portfolio of grants to NGO partners in Southern Africa. Even more importantly, the Program Officer will provide them with strategic professional assistance and linkages as they seek to affect national and international policy and program development.  S/he will draw on and coordinate with IWHC’s own Communications and International Policy expertise, as well as external resources.

PRIMARY PURPOSE & FUNCTION

  • In consultation with the Program Officer, Africa and the Vice President, International Policy and Regional Programs, design and implement a sub-regional program of grants and professional and advocacy assistance to local non-governmental organization (NGO) partners in Southern Africa (currently Botswana, South Africa, and Swaziland).
  • Identify opportunities for further engagement in the sub-region consistent with IWHC’s mission, goals and objectives with particular focus on policy advocacy for women’s and girls’ sexual and reproductive rights and health (SRRH) such as HIV/AIDS, violence against women, and access to safe abortion.
  • Contribute expertise, perspective and input to IWHC’s overall program, strategy, and organizational development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conceptualize, implement and monitor IWHC’s work in Southern Africa:


    • Manage IWHC grants in Southern Africa: solicit, review, and help develop proposals from partners; administer grants; monitor progress; assess impact and quality; and plan for sustainability.
    • In collaboration with the International Policy Senior Program Officers and the Communications Program, facilitate participation of Southern Africa NGO partners in IWHC’s international policy and communications work.
    • Actively support IWHC’s current NGO partners in Botswana, South Africa and Swaziland with particular focus on developing sub-regional advocacy strategies; linking partners to the broader Africa region; and building their capacity, especially to advocate for women’s and girls’ SRRH. 
    • Respond to partners’ requests for and initiate the provision of information and technical assistance on strategic planning, scientific and policy developments in HIV/AIDS (e.g., adult male circumcision), and human rights policy advocacy, among others.
    • Continually assess emerging opportunities for policy improvement and reform and program development for the SRRH of women and young people in Southern Africa, including through working relationships with governments, donors, etc.
    • Identify potential new local NGO partners in Southern Africa and maintain relationships with a wide range of individuals and organizations that can contribute to policy reform and program development through advocacy, public education, and action research.
    • Develop and monitor the Southern Africa work plan and program budget, and write progress reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Passion for IWHC's mission and work required.
  • Five or more years of work experience in women’s sexual and reproductive rights and health, gender and development, and/or HIV/AIDS policy, including at least three years working in or with organizations based in Southern Africa.

IWHC's Latin America Program has worked for two decades with NGOs, public institutions and international agencies to advance programs and activities that will increase access to safe abortion, advance youth health and rights, and promote sexual rights.  The program currently includes country programs in Brazil and Peru, as well as region-wide initiatives and networks.  In recent years IWHC has increased support for efforts to decriminalize and legalize abortion and improve abortion services, strengthened adolescent empowerment activities, and expanded work with indigenous populations, among other projects.

PRIMARY PURPOSE & FUNCTION

  • Contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of the Latin America program.
  • Provide programmatic and administrative support to the Program Officer (PO) for Latin America.
  • Provide input to IWHC's overall program, strategy, and organizational development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Latin America Program:
    • Contribute to the formulation and implementation of the Latin America Program strategy, goals, activities and budget.
    • Assist PO in identifying opportunities for program development in women's and youth sexual and reproductive rights and health in Latin America, maintaining and developing relationships with Latin American colleagues.
    • Assist PO in managing grants including:
      • Proposal solicitation and development as necessary; and
