Support the PATHWAY Act
Bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives to address women's and girls' disproportionate vulnerability to HIV/AIDS worldwide. The Protection Against Transmission of HIV for Women and Youth (PATHWAY) Act, would require that U.S. global AIDS strategy include provisions to:
-
increase access to female condoms;
-
confront gender-based violence, rape and sexual coercion, and child marriage;
-
promote positive male behavior and respect for the rights of women and girls;
-
bolster health care services that women use; and
-
expand educational and economic opportunities.
In addition, PATHWAY would remove the harmful "earmark" in the U.S. global AIDS plan (commonly referred to as PEPFAR) requiring disproportionate funding for abstinence-only-until-marriage efforts. Removing this restriction will enable local communities to have the mix of prevention programming that meets their own needs.
