KristofLuncheon 001This week, IWHC co-hosted an event with the United Nations Foundation to celebrate the release of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, the new book by Pulitzer-Prize-winning team Nicholas D. Kristof & Sheryl WuDunn. The luncheon discussion was moderated by IWHC President Adrienne Germain and centered around global women’s health and rights and learning how to help women to empower themselves.

Stay tuned this week for more impressions of the event from IWHC staff. For now, check out this photo of the event that features Nicholas Kristof, Tamara Kreinin, Adrienne Germain, and Sheryl WuDunn. Tamara Kreinin is executive director of women and population at the United Nations Foundation.

  1. Judith says:

When I heard Nick speak at Duke, I was very concerned that he dodged talking about abortion, saying it is “politically difficult.” When you talk about sexual slavery, prostitution, rape, maternal health and family planning, to omit abortion is really to ignore a huge gap, as you know. My hope is that working with groups such as yours, the authors will come to embrace the idea of working in the critical area. “Bottom up aid” especially should not avoid politically charged issues. The statistics are clear that access to safe legal abortion reduces maternal mortality.

    Thanks
