Action Alert: Tell Google to Rescind its Restrictive AdWords Abortion Policy

Google recently confirmed that  Google  AdWords, , the advertising network that allows advertisers to create ads that appear next to relevant search results, updated its policy in September of 2008.  The updated policy disallows ads for abortion services, such as legal abortion clinics, in 15 countries around the world including Brazil, France and Hong Kong.

Access to safe abortion is a human right, and part of the comprehensive reproductive health services women need to stay healthy.  Every year, nearly 70,000 women die unnecessarily from the complications of unsafe abortions, and countless more suffer debilitating injuries. Email and let them know that their policy is unacceptable. Write your own text, or use the text below.

To Whom It May Concern:

I urge you to rescind your policy prohibiting ads for abortion services in the following countries: Germany, Poland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, France, Italy and Spain.

Through participation in the Global Network Initiative and other programs, Google has demonstrated its commitment to protect access to information as a human right. Access to safe abortion is a human right, and denying women information about legal and safe reproductive health services, jeopardizes their health and well-being. As a result of such violations, unsafe abortions account for 13% of maternal deaths worldwide.

I urge you to rescind the relevant clause in the Revised Policy and do your part to ensure every woman’s right to a just and healthy life.
